Crazy Acres Quilt Along {Block Construction}

Welcome back to our Crazy Acres Quilt Along!

We are ready to start piecing our blocks together! Wahoo! :) This is actually my favorite part of the whole quilting process.

If you need to catch up, here are the previous posts:

March 27: Block Construction
April 10: Top Assembly
April 17: Basting
April 24: Quilting
May 1: Binding
May 15: Show and Tell

Since I have already made my quilt, I thought I would share a few tips before you begin making your blocks!

1. I made my half square triangle units using the 4 at one time method.  This became a problem because of all the bias edges.  I haven't had a problem with this method in the past, but I think because this block has quite a bit more pieces and almost everything is cut on the bias, it created a stretching problem.  My blocks did not lay as flat as I like.  You could make your blocks this way if you'd like, but I just wanted to warn you that you may run into issues.  I am doing the tutorial using the more traditional method of making 2 half square triangles at a time. So you won't run into the stretching problem I ran into!

2. Pin, pin, pin!!! When you are sewing your blocks into rows and then sewing your rows together, you will want to pin at each intersection.  I know a lot of people aren't a fan of pinning, but if you want to achieve those perfect points, and line up your points then you will need to spend the extra time to do so.

3. The iron is your friend! Take your time and properly press all of your pieces! I use steam when I iron, this is a personal preference! Do it however you prefer, but I promise you will get better results when you take the time to press each piece.

4. Take your time.  Don't feel like you have to whip out all 12 blocks in a weekend.  Take your time with it, it's not a race! Have fun with this! :)

Alright, let's get to the fun part! :) Making the block!

Crazy Acres QAL {Cutting}

Hi there! I am so excited to start our quilt along! I am so appreciative of the great response and all the kind comments about our Crazy Acres Quilt! So thank you!

March 11: Fabric Requirements
March 20: Cutting
March 27: Block Construction
April 10: Top Assembly
April 17: Basting
April 24: Quilting
May 1: Binding
May 15: Show and Tell

Hopefully, you have your fabric picked out, ironed and ready to cut!

So let's get started!

Before you start cutting, you will want to think about the overall appearance of your quilt.  Do you want a super scrappy quilt, or are you going for a more simplistic approach?  Do you want one color to be more dominating than another color, or would you prefer to have the colors evenly spaced throughout your quilt?  So keep that in mind as you read through the cutting requirements!

Here is the block that makes up the quilt.  I made this diagram of the block so you can understand what part of the block I am referring to:

Here is how I decided to approach my quilt:

Fabric Flower Tutorial

Hi there!  So, I have had this lovely penny-wise fabric and I thought it would be perfect to make some fun fabric flowers with it! I searched high and low for different ways to make fabric flowers, and finally decided to come up with my own way to make these little lovelies!  I decided on the gray and green color combo because I thought it would be fun to have my little girl wear it for St. Patrick's Day.  But you could definitely make this in any color combination you prefer and it would look just as lovely!
This flower measures about 3.5" across.

Pocket Packs

I will admit, I have a major sweet tooth.  Who cares about dinner--I would rather go straight to dessert! One of my favorite things to eat for dessert is pie.  There is just something so comforting about eating a hot slice pie with a scoop of ice cream!  It doesn't matter what type of pie--a cream pie or fruit pie I will definitely be first in line for a slice!

Now, you may be wondering why on earth I am talking about pie on a fabric blog!  Well, we have been busy baking up some delicious "Pocket Packs" all in decadent pie themes!
