Crazy Acres Quilt Along {Quilting}

Hi there! Welcome back to the Crazy Acres Quilt Along!

April 24: Quilting
May 1: Binding
May 15: Show and Tell

We are nearing the finish line! Wahoo!

Today, I am mostly talking about my experience with quilting this quilt on a long arm machine, if you want a more in depth tutorial on quilting and tips go here!

I have a love/hate relationship with the actual quilting part of the whole quilt making process.  I love it when everything is going well and my design is looking fantastic.  I hate it when, I am breaking threads, my stitches are less than stellar, and my back and shoulders are hurting!

I have found that, no matter how much you practice and prepare, you are going to encounter some issues and difficulties when quilting your quilt.   But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the process, and make the best out of it!  After all, this is supposed to be fun! :)

3 Projects Featuring Moda Toweling!

I have recently discovered Moda Toweling, and I seriously can't get enough of it!  If you aren't sure what toweling is or have never heard of it, then you've come to the right place! I am going to show you what it is, and also show you three different ideas using this toweling!

Moda Toweling, is an affordable cotton fabric that is purchased by the yard.  It is 16" wide, and is hemmed on both sides.  It comes on a roll, kind of like a paper towel roll and it is cut by the yard.  So all you have to do is hem the top and bottom of your towel.  It also comes in a variety of types.

               1. Natural                    2. White                   3. Red/Blue Border

I have used both the white and the natural in these projects, and couldn't be happier with them!

For these tea towels, I used the natural toweling.  The towels measure 16" x 25" finished.  I also made a free pattern for download, so you can make these yourself!  You can download here!

Jodie has made these sweet towels into affordable kits so that you can make your very own! Each kit contains enough fabric to make two towels! You can buy the kits here!

You can enter to win a kit for these towels here! And you can download the PDF pattern for FREE!

For the apron, I used the same method I used to make the towel, except I did 6 prairie points, and I sewed the prairie points on the long edge rather than the shorter edge.  I also added a grosgrain ribbon for the ties, rather than fabric! This was such a fun project and took less than an hour to make!

For the apron I used:
5. 7/8" red grosgrain ribbon (2.5-3 yards)

I wanted to also show you a project with the white toweling!

I decided that my little girl needed a fun little apron! I thought ruffles would be the perfect addition to the apron!

4. 7/8" red grosgrain ribbon

If you know how to sew a ruffle, then you can make this apron! All I did was make 4 ruffles by using the width of fabric strips and sewed them onto the toweling.  I then sewed a strip of red ribbon above the ruffles to cover my seam.  I used another red ribbon on the for the ties.

The sky is the limit here with this little apron, you could add a fun little pocket or even add some appliqué!

I have had so much fun creating these projects with the toweling! I have stocked up on both the natural and the white toweling for future projects! If you decide to make an apron or some towels, I would love to see them! Shoot me an email: lindsey@fortworthfabricstudio.com

Crazy Acres Quilt Along {Top Assembly}

Welcome back!

April 10: Top Assembly
April 17: Basting
April 24: Quilting
May 1: Binding
May 15: Show and Tell

Give yourself a big pat on the back for completing all of those blocks!
By the time my mom and I were done piecing all of those blocks, we had a party! :)

It felt so great to get them all done!!

Top assembly is really quite easy, so before we start I wanted to talk about design walls and how important they are!  I wrote this on my other blog a few months back, and thought I would share it here in case you aren't familiar with a design wall.

Design Wall 1            Design Wall 2           Design Wall 3

Why is it important to put your blocks / quilt design up on a wall?

1.  It helps you see the layout of your fabric/blocks in a different perspective.  When you layout your quilt on the floor you really don't get the same perspective.

2.  It is easier to arrange and rearrange blocks on a design wall rather than on the floor.

3. It also helps to see how fabrics and patterns look in relation to one another.

I have also found it helpful to put up a block or design I'm working on and just leave it up there for a couple of days.  This helps me really decide if I like the design or layout or not and if the fabrics are working well with each other.

Putting things up on the wall to see how it looks is not a new thing.  In fact, this was one of the first lessons I learned in my interior design class in college.  We always put our fabrics on the wall next to one another to see how they would work with each other.  This helps you see what colors and patterns work well with each other and what doesn't look so great.

Another thing that I strongly suggest is take a picture each time you rearrange your blocks.   I can't tell you how much it helps to see the picture of the blocks on my computer screen.  It gives you another perspective as well.  You can put two of your photos next to each other on your computer screen and see which orientation you like best.  I would really recommend trying this if you haven't already.

I recently moved and I no longer have a design wall! EEK! It is killing me.  I didn't even realize how important it was when I had it.  I am going to get one put up in my new house shortly, and I can't wait to use it.  If you haven't used a design wall before, I strongly suggest that you do! Here is a great tutorial from Paula of the Sassy Quilter on how to create a design wall! You can check it out here!

Okay, so let's get to the top assembly!

First, layout your blocks on your design wall.  You want to arrange them in a way that is pleasing to your eye.  Play around with this, and arrange them, step back and look at them.  If you see that you have too much dark in one area, or too much of the same print by each other, then here is your chance to fix it! This is the time that you really want to be picky about how your blocks are arranged.  You don't want to have them all sewn together, and then look at your quilt top and decide that you should have arranged them differently.

If you are really having a hard time deciding how to arrange them, take a picture of the layout and then look at it from the perspective on your phone or computer.  This helps tremendously!! Also, you don't have to sew them all together right away.  Leave them on your design wall for a day or two and just look at them periodically and see if you want to change anything.

If you have your blocks arranged the way you want, you will start by sewing them into rows.  I did rows of three on mine, but if you made more blocks you could do longer rows!

The trick to getting these blocks and more specifically the diamonds to line up is to PIN, PIN, PIN!!!

You will place your blocks right sides together and sew a 1/4" seam.

I literally pinned at each seam on my blocks, yes it took a lot of extra time, but it was worth it! Most of my blocks matched up really well.  So please spend the extra time and pin your blocks together before sewing!

Now that you have your rows sewn, you will now sew them together!

Same idea here, with the pinning! You will take rows 1 and 2 place them right sides together and pin, pin, pin! Sew a 1/4" seam and then add your other rows one at at a time!

Well, that's it! Your top is done! Wahoooo!

If you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments or shoot me an email! I would love to hear from you! lindsey@fortworthfabricstudio.com

Quilt Storage Ideas

Hi there!  I have been drooling over quilt ladders for some time now, and I knew I had to have one so I would have somewhere to display my ever increasing stash of quilts! So, my dad went to work and built me one.  You can read more about that here.  :)

Once it was done, I really fell in love. I decided there has to be other ways to display quilts that I can put in other rooms of my home.  So I decided to start a Pinterest board dedicated to just that! It's called Quilt Storage and you can find it here.

I am only showing you nine here on the blog, but I have lots more that are pinned on our Pinterest Board.  So be sure to check that out for even more inspiration!

Below each picture is a link to it's source.

Wire Basket              Wooden Crate            Quilt Storage Table

Quilt Ladder DIY             Horizontal Ladder           Quilt ladder

I love all of these ideas, but I have to say my favorite besides my quilt ladder of course ;) would be the basket and crate ideas.  You could put this in any room of your house for quilt storage and it would be a lovely way to display some of your quilts.  I am going to be on the lookout this summer at yard sales to see if I can get my hands on a basket or crate similar to these.

How you display your quilts?
