Pretty much self-taught. Basics learned in Home Ec. classes. Have sewn seems "forver"! lol But am pretty new to Quiltimg World & loving it. Thanks for chance to win this Beautiful Charm pack! :)
My mom taught me!
My mom taught me how to sew. When I was ten years old in the 1962, I asked all my neighbors for fabric and my mom taught me to hand sew a Nine Patch Block. Mom helped me put all the blocks together and Dad built a quilt frame. The best part is the whole family helped quilt, including my 2 older brothers. Lots of sore fingers later, we had a finished quilt and the best part is that I still have it today. Good memories!!

I always remember my mom and grandma sewing when I was a child but I remember truly learning (and falling in love ) in 7th grade home ec.
My mom taught me as a kid. We would make doll clothes by hand. She also taught me to piece quilt tops. We used patterns cut from newspaper, or we would make scrap quilts by sewing scraps onto the newspaper and cutting around the shape. I made one of those when I was in 8th grade and won a 1st place ribbon at the 4-H show.
I learned a little at school, and then all else essentially self-taught.

It seems that I have always been sewing. My mom taught me when I was young and I took a home ec. class in 6th grade and made a skirt that I still have! I've been making rag quilts for the last 10 years and in the last two years began creating quilts. Thanks for the chance to win!

I guess I learned the basics in 7th grade home ec class. Really didn't enjoy it. Probably because we had to make a piece of clothing, which I still do not like to do. I wanted to learn to quilt over ten years ago so I taught myself and still learning today.

That is an easy one my Grandmother on her Treadle machine a very, very, very long time ago. In a house with no electricity, running water. You get the picture. However it was fun, albeit cold in the winter with just a wood burning stove. Ahh the good old days.

I've learned a lot on my own, but have also had some help over the years from my Mom, Home Ec classes and my MIL. I've also taken some classes at quilt shows where you learn and have fun at the same time.

I spent a weekend at an aunt's house when I was 4 and she taught me how to make a pillow case..... I've been sewing since but have been mostly self-taught.

I taught myself to sew 2 years ago using books and tutorials.
My mom sewed all mine and her clothes so I just picked up some of it by osmosis, though I never really did get 'into' sewing until my daughter was born at which time I took that basic knowledge and expanded upon it and made my kids clothes for many years. Then a dry spell for about 15 years and now I'm quilting!

I am self-taught for the most part. I took home ec in high school and learned the basics. I now sew every other week at church with my former home ec teacher. She reminds me all the time that when I was in her class I swore I would never sew again. I now sew almost 40 hours a week. I guess you should never say never.
My mom taught me to sew. I remember making lots of different things using flour sack fabrics. I sure would love to have some of that flour sack fabrics now. My mom still has the sewing machine that I learned on with the leg pedal rather than the floor one.

I started sewing in 7th grade home ec. Had to make most of my clothes through high school out of necessity. Coming back now for pleasure.
Learned in 7th grade home ec class. I don't like sewing clothes for myself but did enjoy sewing for my girls when they were little.
My mom did. I started helping her when I was big enough to actually help. I learned how to quilt before I learned how to sew on a machine. I have some awesome memories of helping her!!
My mother taught me how to use her sewing machine but she only sewed when it was a dire emergency. The only way we knew how to thread the machine was by reading the manual. I loved it and sewed on her black Singer so much I burned out the motor. She then bought a Singer Golden Touch and Sew that I used until I killed it. By the time I hit high school home ec I was sewing my entire wardrobe. Taught myself how to piece a quilt from a book and went to an Eastern Star meeting with my step mother where I learned to hand quilt. I've been sewing and quilting for half a century.
I started out sewing doll clothes by hand, and then my mother taught me to use her old treadle machine. I was really hooked then. I mostly taught myself how to make clothes. After that, I started making crafts and quilts. I really love it. I get so much pleasure from sewing no matter what I am making. Thank you for the giveaway.

my mother's quote "the only thing you can really break on a sewing machine is the needle" so she let us sew as young children...home ec almost killed me and my teacher, i spent most of my last year sitting outside the principal's office reading my novel...it was his comprise to keep us from each others throats

My mother taught me to sew. She used to make me clothes when I was little because I couldn't fit most store bought clothes. Then after one project she ended up with a LOT of extra flannel so she asked her friend what to do with it all. Her friend told her to make a quilt. My part of the story is less interesting. I just wanted to join her. :) Thanks for the chance to win!
I have my 8th grade home ec teacher to thank! Mrs. Brown, back in the late 1960s. I probably would never have learned had it not been for her because my mom did not sew. However, my mom did have her own mother's Singer treadle sewing machine. So I learned on an electric machine at school, and then made all my own clothes, and my sisters, on the treadle, until I earned enough babysitting money to buy my own electric machine. I don't make clothes anymore, but through the magic of the internet, I am learning to quilt! And loving it!!

I learned in home economics when I was in 7th grade. I haven't gotten much better, lol. :)
I guess it was Home Ec class in public school (age 9 or so) then my mom would assist at home on her machine, then it was trial and error from there. My Nana taught me cross stitch when I was 13 and I took a Fashion Arts class in High School.
I took Sewing in high school , sewed for awhile and then never touched a machine for 25 years. Since retiring I sew most every day and would say I am mostly self-taught due to the fantastic tutorials i have found online! Joyce jmcclay611@aol.com

I took a sewing classeswhen I was young and in school. But I have taught myself almost everything else I know. I love to sew and learn new things. Right now I a great opportunity to be taking a quilt class from my aunt.

I watched my mom sew for years before I took it up. I loved everything she made me. Then it was 4-H and Home-EC. Too bad good old home-EC isn't around anymore.
My Grandmother taught me all kinds of needle work. I would sit and watch her work and she would tell everything she was doing and why. I just wish she was here in person to see my first quilt. I know she was right there with me and still is when I am doing any thing with a needle or crafting anything. Thanks for the giveaway.

Thank you to my mother for teaching me how to sew. Other influences to my love of sewing: my older sister, two grandmothers, Junior High Home Ec and many dolls that needed clothes and blankets.
My mom and 4-H leader. Ah those first aprons! Home-Ec where I made a shift out of a wild orange and pink flowered fabrics. Hmm, am I showing my age? Thanks Mom! I even am glad you gave me a sewing machine for HS graduation, even if I thought it wasn't a great idea because I didn't like sewing!

I learned to sew in 4-H, but my mother was a great teacher also.
My grandmother taught me how to sew by hand when I was 5-6 and then when I was 9-10, my aunt taught me how to read patterns, cut out garments and sew them on a machine. Learning to sew from these two wonderful ladies created a lifelong bond between us.
My grandmother showed me a few things back when I was taking homemaking in 8th grade. But never really used it. Then when I became pregnant with my son, I started sewing baby clothes. I've taught myself to quilt pretty much. Thanks.

While I learned a few of the basics in 7th grade and ended up able to sew simple things, I really learned how to sew from Mr. Bullard in college. He taught industrial techniques that speeded up the whole process which allowed me to finish projects and enjoy them rather than set them aside because I got tired of looking at them. My youngest niece, just did something similar so, I bought her a new machine as a prize!
My mom tried first (but things she sewed tended to fall apart almost immediately), but my aunt showed me how to do it the right way.

Got a sewing machine for my 18th birthday from mom. It was one of those "Ugh..Thanks mom" while thinking "What am I going to do with this?" She taught me the basics and it took off from there.

My Mother and Grandmother were professional seamstresses and taught me at a very young age. I still have the little chain stitch hand crank sewing machine I got for Christmas when I was 7 or 8. I am now teaching my granddaughter (age 8). She got a real sewing machine for Christmas and we spent most of the day making a quilt for her doll.
I remember sitting with my mother and 2 older sisters while we fought over the sewing machine. I remember when my Mom got a Singer zigzag so we could use it and the featherweight. I remember taking sewing classes in summer school. I don't remember being taught, just absorbing. I bought my first sewing machine when I was in high school.

Self taught until home ec in 7th and 8th grade, where I had a fabulous sewing teacher, Nina Davis. (remember her even now, and I am 58!) After her, I new everything I would have learned in high school home ec, so from then on I learned on my own or had friends teach me. Take occasional quilt classes for new techniques.

My mom taught me the basics but I have far surpassed her sewing skills (sorry mom!). I am a quilter but have wedding dresses and more on my resume.

mom sat me on books to reach the knee pedal on her old singer and gave me material scraps from her sewing adventures and I am sorry I just don't remember how old I was but not that old for a booster seat! that started my fashion sewing just because I didn't have a Barbie to dress..lol
