Mystery Project 2 {Criss Cross Pillow}

Hi there! Time for our second Mystery Project! Yay! I am having so much fun with this!  Today's project is a pillow.  However, if you don't want to make this into a pillow, you could make several of these blocks I'm going to show you and make a table runner, topper, or even a quilt.

Since I am a pillow lover, and I can't ever have enough.  I went with a pillow!  I am calling it the Criss-Cross Pillow

The great thing about this pillow, is it really doesn't have to be for St. Patrick's Day.  I will be using this through the year along with all my other holiday pillows! :)  I stuck with just using one of my green prints in the Mystery Bundle (I used a separate print for the backing) because I wanted it to be simple, and with all the cutting and seams, I decided to go with a print that easily hides your seams.  I am happy with the result, and I can't wait to add this beauty to my pillow spot!

Alright, let's get started shall we?

Supplies:

4 - 5" squares out of print 6
2 - 1.5" x width of fabric strips from background (print 8)
2 - 2" x width of fabric strips from background (print 8) (Only cut this if you are going to make pillow)

Step 1: Start with your 5" square.  Cut in half diagonally.  Place 1.5" x width of fabric background strip right sides together along the long side of the triangle. *Leave about 1.5" of background fabric on top and on bottom of triangle, you will need the excess when you trim your block!  Sew along the long edge a 1/4" seam.  Press.

Step 2: Sew the left over triangle to the other side.  Press

Step 3: Trim off excess background fabric, so that you have a square.

Step 4: Now slice again diagonally.

Step 5: Place 1.5" x width of fabric strip along the long edge of your triangle. *leaving 1.5" on either side.  Sew along the long edge a 1/4" seam and press.

Step 6: Sew the remaining piece onto the strip.  You will need to carefully line this up.  I had to do some unpicking, because I wasn't careful enough! So line up where your background fabric intersects, so that it makes a cross.  Press

Step 7: Trim off excess background fabric, so that you have a square.

Make four blocks.

Step 8: Now sew your blocks together!

Now this is where you can stop, and make more blocks and sew them together to make a runner or whatever your heart desires.  However, if you want to make a pillow like me, continue on!

Step 9: Add your border.  Use your 2" x width of fabric strips for your border.  Sew your top and bottom strip on and then press, then add your left and right strip. With your borders sewn on, you should have a 14" x 14" piece:

Step 10: Make into a pillow cover.  Cut from print 4, two 10" x 14" rectangles for your pillow backing.  Follow my pillow tutorial here to see how to make your pillow!

Here is the back of my pillow:

Alright, that's it for now! Come back next week for our final mystery project! :)

Talk to you soon!

PS: I will be posting a fun little "bonus" mystery project on Instagram this week! So be sure to follow us on IG, so you can follow along!
