Zipper Pouch Tutorial

Hi there! I am excited to share another Gigi Blooms project with you guys!  I just love this new line from ADORNit.  It is so fresh and makes me excited for Spring!

I love making zipper pouches! You can't have enough of these handy little pouches in my opinion! I am always getting requests to make these for gifts!  This zipper pouch is a little larger and would be perfect to put all your everyday necessities in!

Or if you like to take some handwork wherever you are going - it is perfect for those projects too! Just pop the pouch in your purse and you have your handwork with you wherever you go!

Alright, let's get started!

Supplies:

3/8 yard of Fresh Picked (main)
1/4 yard of Clusters (accent strip)
1/2 yard of Gray Burnish (lining)
1 - 14" zipper
Scrap batting or interfacing

Cutting:
2 - 3.5" x 12" of fresh picked (main)
2 - 5" x 12" of fresh picked (main)
2 - 2" x 12" of clusters (accent strip)
2 - 9 1/4" x 12" of Burnish (for lining)

Sew your three strips together and press. (do this to the front panel and the back panel)

Place your front panel and back panel on a piece of batting and do a couple of top-stitches above and below the blue strip, and then trim away excess batting.

Take your front panel and place your zipper pull side down at the top of your front panel.  I like to use larger zippers and then trim them to the size I need.

Place one of the lining pieces right side facing down.  Pin securely, and then sew a seam from top to bottom.  The seam is about 1/4" maybe even less, you want to stay close to the middle of the zipper, maybe an 1/8" from the middle. Use your zipper foot, to help you with this.  You will have to stop before you reach your actual zipper pull, and unzip it a little so you can sew your seam.

Flip over so your zipper pull is right side up and press:

This is what the back looks like:

Top stitch right about 1/8" - 1/4" from the zipper:

Now you will layer all your pieces.  You will place your back panel right side up, and then your front panel with the zipper on - so the zipper pull is face down.  Then place your last piece of lining right side down. Line up all the edges at the top and pin.  Then sew using your zipper foot along the top.

Once it is sewn, lay your pieces out flat and press, and don't forget to top-stitch the other side!

Now you are going to place the lining fabrics so they are right sides together on the right side.  You will have all the front fabrics to the left.  Pin all the way around.  You are going to sew a 1/4" seam all the way around except for a small opening so you can pull everything right side out. **Make sure your zipper is half-way open when you do this step!

Trim off excess zipper tape and trim your corners:

Pull right side out:

Sew the opening in the lining shut:

That's it my friends! A super easy and functional project! :)

UPDATE: If you would like to make the same type of pouch but different sizes here is a chart for you.  Use the same instructions - but use these cutting dimensions:

Talk to you soon,
