Hidden Star Quilt {Free Pattern}

Hi there! I have finally completed the red/aqua quilt, and am ready to show you the tutorial on how to make this quilt top! :) 

I have decided to name this quilt "Hidden Star" because if you look closely, you can see the white stars come out in the secondary pattern.  :) 

I made this entire quilt with the Pick-up Line Bundle (You can purchase it here) and some white background fabric. 

The backing is this really fun Riley Blake print.  It is 108" wide backing--which I absolutely love using! It was wide enough that I did not have to piece my back.  Which was really nice. :)  I quilted this using a meandering pattern.  

The binding fairy (my mom) dropped by and did all the binding by hand.  She did a wonderful job! I love that I have a binding fairy! It makes my life so much easier! :)  I love the look of hand binding, and I love the binding fabric! Those tiny little flowers, are so cute! 

Supplies:
1 Pick-Up Line Bundle (purchase here)
4 Yards of background fabric (Kona Cotton White)
1/2 Yard Binding Fabric (Purchase here)
4 yards Backing and Batting. (**if you buy the 108" wide backing, 2 yards will be plenty-purchase here)


Cutting:

When cutting from your fat quarters, I used a variety of most of the prints in the bundle.  You will have quite a bit left over from your bundle of fabric, since a lot of the quilt is made out of the background fabric.  I am making a whole other quilt, with the same bundle and will share the tutorial soon. :)

Out of red you will need the following:

• 10 - 5" x 5" Squares
• 20 - 5 3/4" x 5 3/4" Squares cut into quarters (Quarter Square Triangles -- QST)

Out of blue you will need the following:

• 10 - 5" x 5" Squares
• 80- 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares

Out of the background fabric you  need the following:

• 80 - 5" x 5" Squares
• 40 - 5 3/8" x 5 3/8" Squares--sub cut into two triangles (Half Square Triangles --HST)
• 20 - 5 3/4" x 5 3/4" Squares--sub cut into quarters (Quarter Square Triangles-- QST)

Instructions:

**all seam allowances are 1/4"

Step 1. Take one background quarter square triangle, and one red quarter square triangle and sew them together. Place them right sides together and sew a 1/4" seam on one of the short sides.

Step 2: Press, and then sew your background fabric half square triangle to the quarter square triangle unit.  Place them right sides together and sew a 1/4" seam on the long side.  Press open and trim to 5" x 5" square.

*You will need 4 of these units per block. 

Step 3: Take your 5" x 5" background fabric squares and your blue 2.5" x 2.5" squares.  You are going to snowball the corner of each 5" x 5" square.  First, draw a line diagonally across the wrong side of the blue square:

Step 4:  Now place the blue square on top of the background fabric square and line up to edges like this and sew ON the drawn line:

Step 5:  Line your ruler up a 1/4" past the seam and cut:

Step 7: Press open, and set aside.

*You will need 4 of these units per block

Step 8: Layout your blocks like this:

You can see the center square is your 5" x 5" red or blue fabric. You will make 10 blocks with red centers, and 10 blocks with blue centers. 

Sew them in rows of three, and then sew the rows together to make the block.

Trim to: 14" x 14"

Now make 19 more blocks and trim them all to 14" x 14"

When you are ready to sew them together, lay them out with the centers alternating red and blue.  

Once you have all your blocks made, sew them together in rows of four.  You will have 5 rows, by the time you are done.  To make your blocks line up nicely, and the diamond intersections to all line up--pin at ALL intersections.  This will help tremendously! :)

Then sew the rows together-pinning at all intersections.

You can add borders if you'd like, I chose not to add borders. 

You are ready to baste, bind, and quilt! Use your preferred method.

Finished quilt measures approximately 54" x 67"
