Moda Sampler Block Shuffle {Block 1}

Hi there! I have something fun to share with you guys today! Moda came out with this fun Moda Sampler Block Shuffle.  Each block is designed by a different Moda designer! I thought it would be fun to make each block and share them as I go!

I am using this lovely bundle of fat eighths:  "Spring Fever".   Jodie pulled these fabrics specifically for these blocks - all the prints are very small scale since the blocks finish at a tiny 6".

Purchase HERE - sold out

I also used Kona White for the backing! We are now offering these Kona colors at a very special price! So be sure to stock up your stash with these basics!

Here is block number 1 - Designed by Pat Sloan:

I had a lot of fun making this block! Some tips I found useful while sewing up this block.

  • Open your seams! Since the block is small, this will help your block lay flat!
  • Pin, pin, pin! If you want to keep those points, pin as you go!
  • Use starch.  When making small blocks, I prefer to starch my fabrics.  I use a Best Press, it is a light starch and really helps my block stay square!
  • This block calls for half square triangles, be sure to mark your fabrics before sewing! I know the squares are tiny, and it would be easy to just eyeball it, but if you do that, you will not get a perfect 1/4" seam! So take the time to do the necessary marking to get your perfect 1/4" seams!

If you would like to follow along, I would love to have you! :) Here are the instructions for block 1:

I'm so excited that you are making these blocks, and I just ordered your fabric bundle. I love your website, thanks for the Kona sale too!

I love all the blocks, It's going to make a gorgeous quilt. However, I do have one question: in block 1, how does this square turn out to be 6" x 6" if there are 4 2" blocks across and down? Seams like it would turn out to be an 8" x 8" square. Doesn't 4 x 2' = 8"?

Hi rrjane,

I'm glad you like the blocks! The reason it's 6" is because you have to account for seam allowance. Hope this makes sense!

One of your tips is to use starch. I've never used it before. Do you starch the entire piece before cutting the sizes you need for each block?

Hi Lynn, a lot of people prefer to starch their fabrics before they even cut into them. I use starch as I go- when I am sewing the block together I will spray a tiny bit of starch and then press my pieces. I will also starch the block when it's finished and give it a good press. This is a personal preference, you can try both ways! I hope this helps! -Lindsey

I have made 2 blocks already and both have turned out to be 6 1/2 each. what am I doing wrong?

Hi there! They should measure 6.5" unfinished - they will be 6" finished. I am sorry I wasn't more clear!

Hope this helps!
