Double Zipper Pouch Tutorial

Hi there! I am so excited to share my newest tutorial with you guys!  You know how much I love my Zipper Pouches - - well I had an idea not too long ago about doing a "Double Zipper Pouch!"

So I came up with this super cute pouch.  It has an exterior pocket that is fully lined - which is perfect for those small things that always get lost in the bottom of your pouches. :)

I used Pat Sloan's newest line Sunday Drive for my zipper pouch and I am LOVING how it turned out.   If you love zipper pouches as much as I do, you have to make one of these! They are so easy to make, and they are the perfect traveling pouch.  You can put your bigger stuff in the main part and those pesky smaller items in the front zipper pocket so they don't get lost in the bottom of your pouch.

Isn't that pocket lining the best?! I think that selvage print is my favorite!  I wanted to make the zippered pocket big enough to fit a few things in, but not too big that I would fill it full and end up with a cluttered mess in there.  So the zippered pocket is the perfect size in my opinion. :)

Alright guys, let's get started!

1/3 yard blue (exterior)
1/3 yard red (lining)
11” x WOF selvage stripe (pocket)
1 natural 14” zipper
1 red atom 9” zipper
1 yard of sf101 interfacing.

 Cutting:
From blue (exterior fabric)
2 - 10” x 12” rectangles
From red (lining fabric)
2 - 10” x 12” rectangles
From Selvage Stripe (pocket)
1 - 9” x 12” rectangle

Step 1: Line all your pieces with SF101 interfacing (follow package instructions)

Step 2: On your pocket piece, you will mark a line 1.5” ( green) , 1.75” (red), and 2” (blue) from the top edge. You will also mark a line 1” (brown) from the left and right and a line 1/4” from your brown line (black).

Step 3: Place pocket 2.5” down from top of the exterior piece and 1.5” from the left and right side.

Step 4: Place pocket piece right side down on exterior piece. Pin into place and sew around the outer edge of the rectangle that you made. Once you have sewed around, then you will use the center line as a guide to carefully slice into both layers of fabric. Stop once you hit the corner of your triangles and carefully snip the triangles open.

Step 5: Push your pocket piece through the hole you just made and press carefully. This will take some patience to get everything to lie flat. Now place your zipper - (Pull side up) and center it. You will want to either glue baste or pin into place. Carefully stitch around your opening, very close to the edge. Securing the zipper into place.

Step 6: Fold up your pocket piece and align the bottom and top edges, so that it is right sides together. Pin into place and then you are going to stitch it closed using a 1/4” seam. You will only stitch around the pocket! Do not stitch into the exterior fabrics.

Step 7: Place your cream zipper, zipper pull down on the right side of your exterior fabric align with the top edge of your fabric and zipper tape.  Stitch into place using a zipper foot using a scant 1/4” seam. Now layer a lining piece right side down and stitch into place using a scant 1/4” seam. Fold over the lining and press once you have sewn.

Step 8: Now you will layer all your pieces. Start with remaining exterior piece right side up, then place your zippered exterior piece right side down (so the zipper pull is right side down), now add your last lining piece right side down. Align everything at the top and pin into place. Use a zipper foot to sew along the top edge to secure everything using a scant 1/4” seam.

Step 9: Open up your pieces so that you have a lining piece and exterior piece on each side press. Top stitch along the cream zipper. Now place your lining pieces right sides together and your exterior pieces right sides together. **Make sure your cream zipper is opened at least half way!!!! Pin into place. Stitch around using 1/2” seam allowance so that you catch all the layers. Leave about a 3-4” opening on the bottom of your lining piece.

Turn pouch right side out through the opening of the zipper. Sew the lining shut (either by machine or hand). Then tuck the lining back into the pouch and you are done!

Whew - that was a lot of pictures! But really you can sew this up relatively quickly! I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and make one of your own Double Zippered Pouches!
