5 Things {Elea Lutz}

Hi there! We are excited to kick off a fabulous new series on our blog today! It's called 5 Things!  We are highlighting some of our favorite designers and bloggers and asking them to share 5 Things we may not know about them!  Our first guest is the lovely Elea Lutz!

Elea is the talented designer behind some of our favorite fabrics! Milk, Sugar, and Flower, and also her newest Christmas collection Little Joys.  She designs for Penny Rose fabrics (sister company to Riley Blake Designs).

Her collections have a charming vintage vibe that we can't get enough of!  The tiny prints and beautiful color palettes she uses makes these fabrics irresistible and absolutely delightful to work with.

Before we get to the five things, I asked Elea a few specific questions about her work and inspiration! I hope you enjoy getting to know Elea as much as I have!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Much of my inspiration comes from my childhood and time spent with my mother and grandmother. Watching them tend to their gardens and flowers, making family recipes or creating beautiful things with their hearts and hands. I often reflect back on those days and draw inspiration from them.

What was the first thing you designed?

My first fabric collection was Milk, Sugar & Flower with Penny Rose Fabrics, which released in January this year. However, I started designing similar prints and packaging for my company, Nostalgia, since 2007. I’ve always had a heart for sweet vintage-style designs.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on new art for fabric. I’m starting to see all my ideas and thoughts come together, which is a really fun part of the process.

What does your creative space look like?

My creative space overflows with vintage trinkets that inspire me, lots of colorful things (ribbons, floss, thread etc.) and boxes full of crafty tools and gadgets. I’m also a fabric hoarder and love pretty paper. Oh dear! I suppose, my space is a big, colorful cluster of the things I love.

1. I’m a small town girl at heart. I grew up in a small mining town in Arizona. Bake sales, parades and county fairs remind me of home.

2. My grandmother will always be an inspiration in my life. Her warm, caring heart, the joy she found in everyday life and her many talents of sewing, embroidery, crochet and firing up her kiln for her handmade ceramics. She was a passionate and lovely lady. I treasure my memories with her.

3. I’ve been married for almost 15 years to my sweet husband, Barry. We have two energetic, young boys, Michael and Matthew.

4. I’ve been drawing and making things since as long as I can remember. I was the kid always dreaming, creating and doodling. I feel very grateful to spend my adult days doing similar things I love so much.

5. I love old stuff. I could spend hours roaming antique markets for trinkets and sweet things. There’s something comforting and joyful I find in old treasures.

I want to thank Elea for sharing a little bit about herself with us!! I always enjoy getting to know the person behind the fabrics! :)
