Quilted Box Pouch

Hi there! While I was at Quilt Market we stopped by the lovely Kate Spain's booth and saw her gorgeous new line, Pardiso.  I love, love, love this new line of hers! She was kind enough to give me a mini charm pack of her new collection.  I was so excited to get back home and make something beautiful out of it!

It didn't take me long to decide that I wanted to make a box pouch with this lovely fabric!  A girl can't have too many bags and zipper pouches in my opinion.  I have several pouches, and I use them all the time.  They are so handy and can be used for so many different things. They also make great gifts, and don't take too long to make, which I love!  Who doesn't love a quick project?!

(Scroll to the bottom for the giveaway info)

If you are scared to sew with a zipper, don't worry! I was too when I made my first ever zippered pouch!  However, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to sew with zippers, and the more practice, you learn what works well for you and you will become a pro! ;)

So let's make one together!

Supplies:

1- Mini Charm Pack
1- 18" x 12" piece of lining fabric
1-  18" x 12" piece of batting
1- 9" zipper
Coordinating thread

Step 1: Sew your mini charm together in a 5 x 8 layout using a 1/4" seam allowance.  (you will have two charms leftover) Your patchwork will measure approximately:  16.5" x 10.5"

Step 2: Quilt your patchwork.  First, place your lining right side down, then your batting goes in the middle and your patchwork goes right side up on top.  Stick a few pins in it to keep it from shifting and then quilt.  (You want your batting and backing a tad bit bigger than your top so that if your fabric shifts a little, you won't run out of backing or batting)

Step 3:  Once you have it quilted trim up all the sides, and then you can zig-zag stitch all around to finish your edges.  This is optional, but I like to do this so it gives it a cleaner look inside!

Step 4: Place your zipper tape right side down on the right side of your quilted patchwork.  Notice the zipper pull is face down.  Align the edge of the zipper tape with the top edge of your patchwork.  Using a zipper foot, stitch your zipper tape down using about 1/4" seam.

Step 5: Now you will top stitch just below your zipper tape on the front side.  You will make sure the zipper tape on the back side is pressed down, so that you catch it when you top stitch.  This helps keep the zipper tape down inside the bag so you don't have any issues zipping and unzipping.

Step 6: Now fold over your patchwork so that you bottom edge aligns with the other side of your zipper tape.  You will then sew it on, using your zipper foot.  Use about 1/4" seam.

Step 7: Now turn your pouch right side out, and then you will top stitch along the other side of the zipper tape like you did in step 5.  You will unzip your zipper, when  you do this, and when you get to the bottom, be careful it can get a little tricky, so just take your time!

Step 7: Sew your sides shut.  I did a 1/2" seam to close my sides.  Just make sure you backstitch at the top and bottom! MAKE SURE YOU OPEN YOUR ZIPPER HALFWAY!! (I forgot....and you have to do this to turn your pouch right side out)

Step 8: You can leave your pouch flat like this if you'd like! OR you can make it into a box pouch! Keep reading to learn how to box your corners!

Step 9: Adding your gussets (boxed corners)

With your pouch inside out. Open up one of your corners, and form a triangle.  Mark a line that's 2" from the tip of the triangle and mark across.  You will then stitch along this line.  You will do this to all FOUR corners.

Step 10: Once you have done all four of your corners, you will trim off the excess fabric 1/4" from your sew line on all four corners. (You can see where I trimmed on three of the corners, the fourth is not showing)

And that's it, You can now turn your pouch right side out, and voila! You have a perfectly boxed pouch!

Now, I have something special to giveaway to one lucky reader! Kate gave each of us a mini charm pack, and Jodie was nice enough to give hers away! So one lucky reader will get this mini charm pack!

I'm so loving everything Kate Spain does at the moment. These charm packs are so handy - thanks for the inspiration. I've done a few zippers in my time, but I'm always scare about doing them. My favourite zipper technique has to be inserting the zipper in an Amy Butler Weekender.

I used to sew a lot of zippers during my garment sewing days but haven't in years. Thanks for the giveaway. Beautiful fabrics.

I used to do garment construction many years ago and then sewed many zippers into projects but have not done so in a long time--maybe this will be my first project with a zipper since those days. I love the box pouch!
