Freedom Table Topper

Hi there! Today I have a fun little project to share with you all!  I have been having so much fun playing with this Freedom fabric by Windham.  I love the Americana feel it has to it, and the rustic colors in this line of fabric.

I have been itching to make a quick project lately, and thought a table topper would be the perfect project.  So I came up with this fun Freedom Table Topper:

Freedom Fabric-- Purchase Here

If you haven't ever tried to make a wonky star, this would be the perfect project to try it out! These little stars are so fun and easy, you will be addicted once you know how to make them! The greatest thing about these stars, is that they aren't supposed to be perfect!

So let's get started:

{Wonky Star Block Tutorial}

You can make these blocks as big or small as you'd like depending on the size of your squares.  For these stars I used 3.5" squares --which made my final unfinished block size 9.5"

For each block you need:
8 squares of background fabric cut 3.5"  (Freedom Words)
5 squares for the star cut 3.5"  (Grunge--Cobalt)

Layout your nine patch with all your background fabrics and one star square in the center like this:

Now you will take one of the background fabrics and one star fabric and overlap them to make one of your points.  You can make them as wide or long as you want, but you will need to be careful to leave a 1/4" seam allowance so your point stays in tact.  You will follow your top fabric as a guide for your 1/4" seam allowance:

Now press the top fabric:

Turn it around so you are looking at the back, and trim off the excess blue fabric:  You will use your background square as a guide where to cut the blue fabric.  You will save the larger piece that you cut off for the other part of your star point, so do not discard!

Now trim the smaller piece off using the background square as a guide:

Turn it back so it is right side facing up, and fold the blue fabric back and trim the bottom background fabric, you will use the edge of the blue fabric as a guide where to trim off that extra piece:

Press again:

Now you will add your other point using that extra piece you trimmed off earlier, follow the same steps as above:

You will do the same thing to the four background fabrics, so you can make your complete star!

You will sew your squares into rows, and then sew the rows together to make your finished block!

And there you have your wonky star block! I love making these stars! They are so easy, and you really can't mess these up. :)

To make the table topper, you will make four of the blocks and add 1 1/2" strips of sashing between the blocks!  You can find all the Freedom fabrics I used HERE and the dark blue Grunge fabric HERE!

Talk to you soon!
