Hi there everyone,

This week we`re continuing on our series of making our Vintage Market Quiet Book. I hope you`re enjoying it so far and all the steps have been clearly communicated! Please feel free to leave me any comments or question you have and I`ll be happy to answer them for you!

Last week we did the oh-so-cute strawberries with snaps!

This is week is the coordinating page from last week`s page- our Basket with a zipper pocket page!
I think this one is my girl`s favorite- she loves doing up and undoing that zipper! Pages 3 and 4 are her go-to pages everytime!

Step 4: Making page 4- The Basket page

This page is meant to put the strawberries into once the child takes them off page 3. They love putting things in the basket! This page is also good to put any other stray pieces from the other pages into so they don’t get lost.

Cut 1 8 ½” L x 8 ¾” W rectangle of fabric.  Draw a basket on a piece of paper to use as a template and cut out your template. Take this template and trace it onto some fusible web.

Cut out the basket shape and fuse it to the back of fabric for the basket. Then cut out the basket shape of fabric and peel off the fusible web and iron it onto the rectangle of fabric. Applique around all raw edges of the basket. This is going to be the background of our basket.

Now we’re going to create the pocket of the basket. Take your template and cut the handle part off. Cut out the top circle part of the basket from the basket base on your template.

Take the oval part of your basket template and cut it in half so you have two half-circle pieces.  Take your two half-circle templates and put them on the back of your fabric and trace the templates adding a ¼” seam around all sides of the both pieces (this is slightly different than the picture- I didn’t add ¼” seam allowance to the top of the top half circle and I should have- oops!). Cut out your two half circle shapes.

Take one of your half circle pieces and line up the straight edge with one long edge of your zipper, right sides together (so the right side of your fabric will be touching the right or top side of the zipper). Using a zipper foot sew along that edge. Do the same with the other half circle piece on the other side of the zipper. You can use a zig zag stitch or a serger to encase the raw edges of your two seams so they won’t fray (optional). Now you will have the circular part of the basket with a zipper sewn into it that looks like this:

Now take the rest of the basket template and trace it onto the back of a different colored fabric and add a ¼” seam allowance to the top curved part only. Cut it out.

Take your basket base piece and your oval basket piece and line up the curved top of your base piece with the bottom curved edge of your oval piece right sides together. Pin in place and sew using ¼’ seam allowance. Sewing a curved seam is not too difficult, just go slowly.

Once you’ve sewn your seam then notch the curved seam allowance and press the seam towards the oval piece. Top stitch that seam 1/8” away from the curved edge. Now the pocket has been created! We’re not going to sew that pocket on yet, but just lay it over top of your appliqued basket background to make sure the pocket is about the same size. Set it aside for now.

Yay! You`ve completed another step! Just trust me on this, there are certain things that cannot be sewn onto your quiet page just yet because we have to get through another step before we can sew everything on- this is why we are setting aside parts of our quiet pages for now.
