Today we are welcoming back Paula, from The Sassy Quilter! She is showing us how to make this lovely Winterberry Table Topper for Christmas in July!
Hi there! Paula here from over at The Sassy Quilter. A not so secret about me is that I love Christmas! And now is the perfect time to start getting your projects together and figuring out your handmade holiday gameplan
I have a tutorial for you today to make this really easy Winterberry Table Topper. I love these smaller holiday projects because they are so versatile and can even be used as a wall hanging, bonus.....this one can go all winter! If you can master the half-square triangle you can do this project super quick!
1 Winters Lane Layer Cake or Assorted FQ's in brown, red and blue prints
2/3 yd fabric for backing and binding
This entire topper is constructed using 4" squares. I used a layer cake in Winters Lane by Kate & Birdie Paper Co for Moda Fabrics, pulling out the assorted 10" squares I wanted for this project. The values are light, medium and dark to give the project some contrast so keep that in mind when picking your fabrics.
Cut 6 Brown, 12 Red, and 18 Blue - 4" squares.
Cut backing fabric on the fold and use half for the backing and from the other half, cut (4) 2.5" strips to create your binding.
Your backing and binding can also be pieced from FQ's or the rest of your layer cake!
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all your blue squares. Placing right sides together, pair all of your brown and red squares with a blue square.
Stitch 1/4" away from both sides of the drawn diagonal line. Then cut on the line to yield two half square triangles.
Press open and trim to 3.5". You should have a total of 36 half square triangles, 12- brown/blue and 24- red/blue.
Using the picture above, layout your half square triangles.
Sew all of your half square triangles into rows and then join the rows together to complete your top!
Now layer your backing, batting and quilt top and quilt as desired.
I went with a straight line quilting design for mine using my walking foot. A dense quilting design helps your table topper lay nice and flat.
Join your 2.5" strips together to create your binding.
This project finishes at 18.5" x 18.5".
Hope you guys are enjoying all this Christmas inspiration! I am using this as a gift for someone special and it feels good to be ahead for once
Keep it Sassy♥
