Lucky Shamrock Pillow {Tutorial}

Hi there! It's hard to believe we are already in March! I thought it would be fun to share with you this simple and easy pillow for St. Patrick's Day.

This is one of those projects that you can get done in no time at all! Also, if you don't want to make a pillow out of this, you can use the same pattern for a table topper or mug rug.  I have also included two different size heart templates to download.  The small template is used for the tutorial I am showing you today.  The larger template is for this pillow pictured below that is simply just a shamrock on a white background.

So let's get started:

Supplies needed:

Scraps of assorted green fabrics
1/2 yard of background fabric (this includes the backing for pillow)
Heat and Bond
Shamrock Template (Download Here
*For this pillow and dimensions you need to use the smaller heart template

Cutting:
 12 -- 3" x 3" squares from assorted green fabrics
1 -- 5.5" x 5.5" square of background fabric
3" x 10" piece of green fabric (for shamrock and stem)

First, you need to iron your heat and bond to your 3" x 10" piece of fabric.  Follow the instructions according the package you are using.

Next, cut out the heart and stem from the template you printed.  Trace the heart and stem onto the back of your heat and bond and then cut them out.

Peel the heat and bond off the back of the hearts and stem and then place them in a shamrock shape.  Then place your hot iron over it and iron the shamrock in place.  Once you have it nice and secure, you want to stitch it down.  You can do this however you'd like.  You could do an appliqué stitch by hand or by machine, or you could just stitch around it a few times with a straight stitch like I did here:

Now to attaching the scrappy borders:

Now here is where your options are endless, you could make this into a table topper or you could make this into a cute little pillow.  OR you could even make a few of these together and make a table runner.  I decided to make mine into a pillow.  If you would like to do the same, you can get the full tutorial on how to create an envelope style pillow here. It is easy peasy, and will literally take you less than a 1/2 hour to turn this into a pillow cover.  :)

If you decide to make this pattern I would love to see it! You can email me a photo: (lindsey@fortworthfabricstudio.com) or you can upload a picture to the Fort Worth Fabric Studio Flickr Group

I really like the fabric you chose. Lively greens, the color of limes. I agree that would make a beautiful mug rug. Or a potholder to brighten a kitchen countertop. I also like the quilt you gave us a glimpse of in the second picture. I'm pinning it right away!

My daughter and I made two today. I just increased the size 200% and we sewed it to a 12.5 inch block with 2.25 inch borders to make it fit a 16 inch pillow form. I'll share pics tomorrow!
